X58 to support SLI technology

X58 support for SLI will allow users to build multi-GPU machines using the forthcoming 'Nehalem' processor architecture.

Intel’s forthcoming core-logic chipset, the X58, will natively support nVidia’s multi-GPU SLI technology. The announcement was made at nVidia’s ‘Nvision’ event, which was held in San Jose, California.

SLI technology enables up to four graphics cards to work in parallel to enhance graphics performance. Previously consumers were forced to use one of nVidia’s own core-logic chipsets, such as the 780i or 790i, if they wanted to build a SLI-enabled PC.

SLI is similar to competitor AMD’s own CrossFire X technology, as this too enables users to combine up to four cards to improve graphics performance. Intel’s chipsets have supported CrossFire technology for a number of years.

The X58, codenamed Tylersburg, is a high-end desktop-aimed chipset and is expected to be one of the first chipsets on the market to support Intel’s forthcoming ‘Nehalem’ architecture processors. It will offer compatibility with the new LGA1366 CPU socket, offers triple channel DDR3 support and sports a PCI Express 2.0 bus.

The X58 is expected to be fabricated using a 65nm manufacturing process and is the successor to the high-end X48 chipset. Motherboards based on the X58 should be available on the market by quarter four of this year.
