Travellers could one day board a train in Manama, Bahrain and get off in Paris, France under a proposal from King Hamad.
A GCC rail link to Turkey could be up and running in five years - with central Europe the next step, reported the Gulf Daily News on Tuesday.
Planners are already mapping out possible rail routes from Bahrain and other GCC states to Europe, via Turkey.
His proposed GCC rail link to Turkey could become a reality "in the next five to six years", Turkish Ambassador to Bahrain Osman Haldun told the paper.
It would ultimately lead to the Gulf region being connected to Europe by rail.
"Once there is a railway to Turkey, a connection to Europe is the natural thing to happen after that," said Mr Haldun.

As air travel is no longer any joy with overcrowded airports and horrible transfers this sounds like the future of leisure travel to the GCC.
It will also be a way of competing with other destinations in a future where air travel will not be politically acceptable for holidays.
