Dubai Customs has recovered $14 million in customs fees from importers trying to undervalue the goods they bring into the emirate, the department has revealed.

Increased traffic at Dubai ports and the improved capacity and capability of the audit department resulted in the successful handling of 32,000 fraud and smuggling cases during the seven months up to the end of July.

This represents an increase of 6,000 cases during the same period in 2007, according to cargo operations executive Director Mohammed Matter Al Marri.

“The Audit Department successfully recovered considerable amounts during the first half of 2008 as compared to the same period of last year. The amounts to be recovered are expected to greatly jump by the end of the current year”, said Al Mari.
