GCC chiefs condemn Iran over island row

IRAN CRITICISED: GCC leaders have hit out over occupation of island of Abu Musa.

The ministerial council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has added its weight in condemning Iran's opening of two administrative offices on the island of Abu Musa.

The council urged Iran to withdraw those illegal structures and to respect the UAE's sovereignty and territorial integrity, news agency WAM reported on Wednesday.

The criticism was contained in a final statement of the council's 108th meeting which ended late on Tuesday.

The meeting was presided over by Qatar, which currently chairs the six-member GCC Supreme Council.

Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan led the UAE's delegation at the meeting, during which the council re-affirmed its support for UAE sovereignty over its three islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa.

The council expressed regret that all contacts with Iran had failed to achieve any resolution.

The council called for Tehran to listen to the UAE's "sincere calls and efforts" to resolve the issue through direct negotiations or international arbitration at the International Court of Justice.
