SHIP SEIZED: The Crown vessel that was stopped by police in Dubai.

Police are stepping up their inspections of ships off the Dubai coast after a vessel was seized for breaching safety regulations.

Dubai officers seized the Crown ship which was carrying a Comoro Islands flag off Al Hamariya port for violating international marine regulations.

Having started its journey from Al Nakhla Island, it was heading toward Comoro Islands, police said on Wednesday.

The ship was stopped and officers discovered it was operating with an expired licence.

It had recently been used for labour accommodation and its captain had employed unauthorised workers to carry out maintenance works in the ship.

There were no lights in the ship, and it did not meet international safety standards, said Colonel Mohamed Jassem Al Zaabi, director of Ports Police Station.

He added that the police were carrying out regular inspections off Dubai shores to ensure that all the incoming ships abided by the international marine regulations.
