Wanted: Government health ‘champions’

A total of 60 healthcare professionals from the private sector are being asked to volunteer to act as ‘change champions', to work with staff during the implementation of the government's healthcare reforms.

Volunteers will join 70 champions recruited from the public sector by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) in April.

The champions are all front-line professionals who act as a link between their colleagues and the DHA. Each is charged with giving key messages from the DHA to a targeted group of co-workers and feeding their comments and concerns back to the Authority.

Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, director general of the DHA said: "The change champions will act as drivers of change, helping us to create a level of understanding in the medical community, in terms of what we are seeking to achieve and when."

A key aspect of the role is to set the record straight on rumours and provide answers to staff questions, according to current champion Sudha Shirish Salve, a staff nurse on the neonatal intensive care unit at Dubai Hospital.

"We need to listen to them [staff] and say OK this is your concern and we will contact the DHA and get the answer and then we can say it's not true it's a rumour," she said.

Champions are expected to spend 20% of their time on the role, running seminars, lectures and one-to-one sessions on reform topics, for which training is given.
