OLYMPIC DECISION: Qatar Olympic Committee has decided to name and shame sportsmen who failed tests. (Getty Images)

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has named and shamed seven sportsmen after they tested positive for various performance-boosting drugs.

The athletes, including footballers, a basketball player, a snooker player and volleyball player, have also been banned for two years from all competitions.

The tests were carried out by the Qatar National Anti-doping Commission (QNADC) during the 2007-2008 season that ended in July, Gulf Times reported on Thursday.

A total of 461 dope tests were conducted during various local, regional and international tournaments.

Those who tested positive were footballers Abdurrahman Mahmoud (Umm Salal Football Club) and Naif Mubarak al-Khater (Al Wakrah Football Club), basketball player Dawoud Mussa Dawoud (Qatar Sports Club), volleyball player Faraj Saeed al-Obaidan, snooker and billiards player Nasser Ahmed Saif Eldeen, handball player Nasser Abdulla Salim and taekwondo expert Mohamed Taqi.

The seven can appeal against the ban, the QOC told the paper.

Dr Fatima Khamis al-Malki, the executive director of the QNADC, said that the release of the report was not intended to damage the reputation of the athletes violating the rules but rather to raise awareness about doping.

Al-Malki also said that her committee will continue conducting dope tests to detect the athletes who are in violation of international rules.

I would think there are drugs to minimize shaking, focus eyes etc. The more important point however is look at the prison penalties in this regon for recreational drugs and yet taking of drugs for sport enhancement (which seems MUCH more serious) is as simple as a little ban from competing?
