CHILD BRIDES: No decision was made in Saudi divorce case after elderly husbands failed to turn up for hearing.

A Saudi court has indefinitely adjourned the case of two girls, known only as Sheikha and Abeer, seeking divorce from their elderly husbands.

The Shariah Court in Naif made the decision after the husbands did not show up for a hearing scheduled earlier this week.

Sheikha’s father had married her off to Abeer’s father in exchange for marriage to Abeer.

The judge, however ordered a police case against the two men, Saudi Gazette reported on Thursday.

The mothers of Sheikha and Abeer had gone to court on the grounds that the marriage contracts were signed without the brides’ consent.

The mothers had also appealed to the Governorate to intervene. Sheikha had tried to commit suicide, the paper said.
