Airlines are stepping up their game in a bid to be 'the best'. Lizzie Cernik looks at the world's five star airlines, as voted by research company, Skytrax.

Singapore Airlines

In May 1947, a Malayan Airways aircraft took to the skies from Singapore's Kallung Airport on the first of three scheduled weekly flights to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. Over the next 20 years the airline grew steadily, changing its name to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines in 1966. In 1972 the carrier split into two entities and Singapore Airlines was born.

With some 100 Boeing and Airbus aircraft in its fleet, the carrier is one of the biggest, most well-established airlines in Asia.

Recently Singapore introduced luxury travel suites for premier passengers travelling on the new Airbus A380. Exclusive to the airline, these personal cabins offer passengers space, comfort, privacy and a dine-on-demand a la carte dinner service.

In addition the airline has introduced a new first class service on its Boeing 777-300ER and lie flat beds in its business section. Children in premier class are offered the ‘Yummy' menu, which allows them to select the dish of their choice up to 24 hours in advance of flying. With spacious seating, an easy to use in-flight entertainment system and personal power supplies, the airline's new economy class has been designed for maximum comfort.

Meow-Seng Lim, general gulf manager, believes the airline's accolades speak for themselves, saying: "These awards that Singapore Airlines has been winning over the years encompass categories such as in-flight service and entertainment, food and beverage, ground services, as well as safety and company management."

"It is also the consistency through the years that the Airline has been accorded with good ratings by its customers that makes it even more remarkable."
