Sony Gulf confirms overheating complaints in the Middle East

Sony has announced that it’s recalling 440,000 Vaio notebooks worldwide due to wiring faults that can result in overheating.

The company received 209 reports of overheating worldwide, including seven incidents with people reporting minor burns. While there have been overheating complaints in the Middle East, Neil D’Sylva from Sony Gulf clarified that no recalls have taken place in the region.

“We have been notified that there have been very few cases of overheating. However, there have been no cases of burns,” said D’Sylva.

19 separate Vaio models from the TZ series that were manufactured from May 2007 till present were said to be affected. According to the company, wires were placed in a wrong position near the hinge, while a flaw in the circuit board that controls the screen could cause overheating.

Sony Gulf has announced a free inspection and repair procedure for consumers in the Middle East to determine whether their Vaio TZ notebooks are from the affected batch.

“Additionally, we have also alerted all our retail partners and dealers who will guide their customers accordingly,” D’Sylva added.

Shares of the company fell 4.2%, reaching a three-year low following the recall announcement.
