Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has clarified confusion over the charges for the two new toll gates which begin operating on Tuesday in Al Safa and on Al Maktoum Bridge.

Salah Al-Marzouqi, director of RTA Intelligent Traffic Systems Department, said in a statement that motorists will only be charged once when crossing Al Barsha gate and Al Safa gate in both directions in one trip, within one hour.

“One trip means when a vehicle passes under Al Safa Toll Gate, the toll charge will be deducted once even if the vehicle passes under Al Barsha Toll Gate and vice versa, during a specific period of time fixed as one hour,” Al-Marzouqi said.

The toll gate system (Salik) is also fitted with control systems to recognise traffic bottlenecks triggered by road collisions, he added.

The new gates are part of the RTA’s phase two of the Salik system.

The gate at Al Maktoum Bridge will be free of charge while the Floating Bridge is closed, from 10 pm to 6 am.

Currently there are toll gates on Al Garhoud Bridge and on Sheikh Zayed Road at Al Barsha opposite Mall of the Emirates.

Motorists are charged four dirhams each time they pass through the gates.

Pay salik to leave home
Posted by Amanda, Dubai on Wednesday 10 September 2008 at 22:10 UAE time

I live in a building right in front of the new Al Safa toll gate, which means I have to pay 4 dirhams every time I want to leave home, and 4 more to come back. There's no way to avoid it..
car registration fees
Posted by Adam, Dubai, UAE on Wednesday 10 September 2008 at 11:49 UAE time

I heard as well that they might considerably raise the car registration fees.. i hope that it isnt true.. i've been here for almost 20 years and this is the first year I would think about leaving.. I'm not here to get rich or enjoy heat and humidity but at least to live decently. the cost of running my small company is up by more than 40 % and becoming very competitive to be able to raise our fees that much..

They do charge charge motorists for getting into their cars and it called the licence registration fee.

And heaven knows what is going to happen to these fees next year...
Ridiculous!

I agree with Adam's comment. They just want to charge people in any way possible!!! Soon, there will be toll gates on almost every single road in Dubai so that there will be no way that people can get around without paying at least 4 AED! Why don't they just charge people for getting into their cars!
