Dubai's deputy ruler calls for more transparency

The Dubai Executive Council (DEC) has been given orders to set new standards for government transparency as the crackdown on corruption continues.

The instructions have been given by Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai's deputy ruler who also called for new mechanisms to be put in place to improve work ethics in a bid to boost trust between citizens and the institutions, news agency WAM reported.

At a meeting on Monday, Sheikh Maktoum also instructed the executive body to revise the organisational structure of Dubai companies and institutions, plus job descriptions of all employees.

The meeting comes just weeks after the Government of Dubai declared war on all acts of corruption and bribery.

Dubai's public prosecutor said rooting out corruption was the Government's number one priority following the recent arrests of high-ranking business figures in the emirate.

"The government will continue to have a strict stance against all aspects of corruption and will take legal measures against violators," he said.

DEC also considered Dubai Courts' strategy to streamline judicial procedures and increase efficiency and performance - which is to be implemented by 2011.

The plan includes a maximum of a three-month period to settle all pending cases.
