The third quarter of 2009 is when Intel plans to bring its next generation, low-voltage, Atom processor to market. A roadmap with the launch date surfaced at Intel’s 2008 Developer Forum (IDF).

The new chip, codenamed Pineview, will be sold in single- and dual-core versions. This new CPU will be based on the Lincroft micro-architecture whereas the current Atom is based on the Silverthorne architecture. Intel is scheduled to launch the first dual-core variant of its Atom processor later this month.

One of the biggest differences between the current and next generation Atom is the latter could feature an integrated memory controller and a graphics processing unit (GPU). It is also said that the next generation Atom will interface with a motherboard’s core-logic chipset via a Direct Media Interface (DMI) rather than using a conventional front side bus (FSB), like the current Atom.

AMD is said to be working on an Atom competitor that is destined for the netbook market. The chip, codenamed Bobcat, is rumored to feature a 1GHz core clock, 128Kbytes of L1 cache, 256Kbytes of L2 cache and has a power draw of just 8-watts.

VIA is also said to be working on a low voltage netbook CPU based on a 65nm fabrication process though other specifications haven’t yet surfaced.
