Meeting Las Vegas
by Selina Denman on Saturday, 13 September 2008
Meeting planners are spoilt for choice in the entertainment capital of the world, says Selina Denman.
Las Vegas is an old hand when it comes to hosting events - the city of surplus attracts more than six million meetings and convention related visitors every year and hosted 24,000 events in 2007 alone. In purely economic terms, the meetings and conventions industry annually contributes some US $6.2 billion to the city's already brimming coffers.
"Las Vegas is truly the event capital of the world," says director of sales and marketing at JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa, Carmen Rubino. "From dining, shopping and shows to sightseeing, golf, spas and great year-round weather - we have it all."
Like the big-name entertainers that headline on its Strip, Las Vegas is a master of many guises - few cities are able to reinvent themselves with such regularity.
"Our marketing and revenue strategies have continually changed to offer up a variety of experiences not known in any other US ‘resort destination' cities," notes Liz Fetherolf, vice president of sales and marketing at Inventive Incentive ProductionsLiz Fetherolf, , a 17 year old, full service DMC and special event planning company headquartered in Las Vegas.

Looking beyond the bright lights, planners will find a lively destination that offers unmatched diversity. "From helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon to celebrity chef cooking demonstrations to custom-designed interactive programs, Las Vegas and its fabulous hotels provide an atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere on the planet," says vice president of convention sales at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Chris Meyer.
From the mammoth hotels that stake their claim along the Strip to the sprawling resorts tucked away from all the commotion, meeting planners have a range of accommodation options to choose from.
"What sets our resort apart from so many Las Vegas properties is our physical property - the hotel sits on 54 acres of beautifully manicured grounds, and our location, as we are 20 minutes off-Strip in the master planned community of Summerlin, just minutes from Red Rock Canyon. In addition, the resort offers world-class golf and a fabulous spa," says Marriott's Rubino.
