New centres are to be introduced at schools in Saudi Arabia in an effort to curb bullying and violence between teachers and students.

Schools will be provided with National Human Rights Authority (NHRA) centres as cases of violence at schools has been increasing over the last few years.

“We have received a lot of complaints concerning school violence and bullying,” said Mufleh Al-Qahtani, head assistant at the NHRA, in a report by the Saudi Gazette on Monday.

He said many students are too embarrassed to discuss such issues and the aim of the centres would be to improve the human rights situation in schools and encourage students to discuss their rights openly.

The Bully Syndrome
Posted by T Crowe Semler, Fayetteville, AR, USA on Monday 15 September 2008 at 19:46 UAE time

The effects of “bullying” on young people can create lasting psychological damage. We must be aware that bullying is not gender specific. Both boys and girls schools must implement proactive measure to insure a safe healthy learning environments for our children. It is very difficult to repair “damaged goods”. Our children should have every opportunity to reach their full potential. This will insure a healthy mental outlook for our future generations. The Saudi Education Ministry must address “bully syndrome” at every level…even among the instructors and administrators. The proverbial “pecking order” has the potential to bring harm to the goals of the Education Ministry…a great education for the children.
