Dubai’s British University fit for King’s

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Tuesday, 16 September 2008

The British University in Dubai (BUiD), the region's first research-based postgraduate university, has signed a memorandum of understanding with King's College London to launch its new MSc degree in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution.

The first intake of applicants will commence in 2009.

The Middle East's construction sector recorded a real growth rate of 19.7% in 2006 and expects to expand at a slower pace of 10.4% from 2008 until 2012, according to the UAE-based investment bank Al Mal Capital.

The explosive growth has brought challenges such as rising material prices, workforce management issues and delayed completion periods. These have required the support of qualified specialists in addressing legal issues and explaining the changing regulatory environment.

The deal was encouraged by the region's demand for educated professionals capable of tackling complexities within the GCC's construction industry.

According to BUiD executives, the degree will be led by "the right mix of locally-trained specialists to support the construction industry." The course is expected to attract students from all sides of the construction industry and its professions, including lawyers, engineers of various disciplines, architects and surveyors.

"The agreement to offer this new MSc in partnership with King's College London provides us with an excellent basis to increase the number of research-based studies of the sector and enhance the range of expert resources to support regional construction markets," said Dr Abdullah Al Shamsi, vice chancellor of BUiD.
