Teachers to spell out environmental awareness

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Wednesday, 17 September 2008
The EAD puts priority on effective teacher training.

The new module of the Enviro-spellathon, an online programme educating students on envionmental issues, hopes to attract younger pupils with updated, interactive activities.

Featuring a dedicated resource section, the website will allow teachers access to a range of materials. The programme works at seven levels, targeting students between the ages of 6 and 13.

Children are given booklets enhanced with images of animals and plants, and have two weeks to study the contents at home. After a test, they receive certificates and gifts according to their scores.

The new interactive module features all printed material in electronic format, as well as supplementary activities for classroom use, and interactive games and quizzes.

"There is now a new generation growing up in the emirate which is more environmentally savvy, thanks to the foundation that Enviro-spellathon has laid for the past 8 years," said Majid Al Mansouri, secretary general of the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD).

The agency has revealed more educational projects lined up for schools, including the Annual Environmental Competition, on the theme ‘CO2- Kick the Habit.' Other efforts to engage students will include ecology field trips and the Solar Learning and Education Programme.

EAD is also developing targeted teacher training workshops. Its Sustainable Schools Initiative is scheduled to kick off in schools from January 2009.
