HSBC on Monday night restored ATM withdrawal limits in the UAE to normal levels, one week after the country was targeted in an international ATM fraud.
“There is a very small segment of our customers whose accounts remain vulnerable and who have not yet changed their PINs,” Jonathan Campell James, regional head of fraud and security risk in the Middle East, said.
“HSBC has this evening been contacting this group of customers via SMS asking them again to change their PIN numbers.”
The bank has introduced a special accelerated procedure for refunding customers within 72 hours of registration, and is providing free replacement cards.
It is still not known how many customers were affected by last week’s fraudulent withdrawals, or how much money was lost.
A National Bank of Abu Dhabi spokesperson said that “very, very few” of its customers had been hit and that it will reveal the total number “once [it] has the full picture”.
