The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) has announced the appointment of biologist and bushfire ecology expert Professor Rob Whelan as its new president.
By attracting some of the world's best universities to establish themselves here, Professor Whelan said that the UAE was offering students from across the region access to quality education.
"The University of Wollongong is proud to have contributed to this effort by introducing the Australian model of higher education to this region," he said. "I believe that in a diverse and multi-cultural society, higher education has to evolve with the needs of the times, while maintaining the age-old academic traditions and processes."
His remit will be to build on the work of the university and expand its range of programmes, soon to include education and health.
Professor Whelan was Dean of the Faculty Sciences at Wollongong University in Australia before coming to head the Dubai campus.
