A reseller from the Hawalli district of Kuwait was caught in possession of unlicensed software in the latest raid coordinated by the Ministry of Information and Microsoft Gulf.

400 CDs and two hard disks filled with unlicensed software were confiscated from Hawalli. The district was also the focus of an earlier raid, where laptops containing illegal copies of software were seized.

“We believe that our recent series of raids will show illegal traders that we are going all-out in ensuring that our growing IT sector will not be compromised by their activities,” said H.E. Rasha Al-Sabah, intellectual property rights manager, Kuwait.

A Memorandum of Understanding with the Business Software Alliance has seen Kuwait launch an anti-piracy media campaign to highlight violations against intellectual property rights.

“We are currently evaluating even more leads that will bring us closer to our goal of attaining a piracy-free environment,” Al-Sabah added.

“We still have a long way to go to reduce software piracy in Kuwait, but we have made significant strides. The huge economic losses incurred by Kuwait due to this high level of piracy is a sufficient reason for us to highlight the risks and support the apprehension of offenders,” added Jawad Al Redha, BSA co-chairman in the Middle East.
