Desert chic

Epicure is a café and deli offering all-day dining.

Dubai's only top-end boutique hotel, Desert Palm, is an oasis of calm where the bustling metropolis nearby seems a million miles away.

Dubai has become renowned for its large and opulent hotels, some that tower high into the clouds and others that boast a wide range of accommodation that occupies large areas of prime beachfront property.

The occupancy rates they achieve suggest they must be in demand, yet few properties cater to the new breed of discerning traveller emerging - those who desire exclusivity, privacy, a home-away-from-home atmosphere and importantly, an un-crowded retreat where they are shielded from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

Fortunately, hotel operator Per Aquum, which already runs boutique properties in the Maldives (Huvafen Fushi) and Sri Lanka (The Fortress) has realised the potential of this growing niche market and on March 28, 2008, opened Desert Palm - a retreat set in the 150-acre grounds of a private polo estate.

Owned by Ali Albwardy, one of the world's leading polo players, the boutique property offers just 24 rooms and villas complemented by a wealth of top-notch facilities and services, from the 100% Halal LIME spa to the café-style deli and all-day dining outlet Epicure.

The key selling points of this retreat are plentiful: firstly, there is a distinct air of tranquility thanks to a combination of the warm and friendly staff, the subtle hues and tones incorporated into the contemporary décor - the designers have fused equestrian themes with Asian-inspired architecture - and importantly, the unique setting.

Being surrounded by green polo fields is soothing and this location provides a perfect backdrop for afternoon tea, early evening cocktails or an exclusive event, product launch or a special occasion.

The F&B outlets are also standout features - the bar/lounge area ‘Red' offers a good selection of beverages, particularly Old and New World wines, while signature restaurant Rare is a meat-lovers haven, with steaks, game and Wagyu beef just some of the treats on the menu, although fish and vegetarian options are available.

Desert Palm's all-day dining outlet Epicure is a great place to tuck into an à la carte gourmet breakfast in casual surroundings adorned by funky design-led furniture and décor.

What's more, there's a deli where you can hand-pick fresh bread, meats, cheeses, olive oils and a much more - and it's all organic.

Speaking of which, products used in the property's LIME spa are not only 100% organic, but 100% Halal - a first for Dubai.

Not only that, but the facility boasts some of the largest therapy rooms in town and arguably the most comfortable treatment beds.

For those who prefer a swim to a spa treatment, the large pool will not disappoint and neither will the giant floating bean bags - which again, is a first for Dubai.

And last but not least, the accommodation has been well thought out featuring good quality fixtures and fittings - think Bang & Olufsen technology, electric blinds, a King-size-plus bed and boutique bathroom amenities - not to mention a very large mini bar and a selection of beverages and glassware you'd find in your own home.

The 13 Palm Suites boast unrivalled views of the manicured polo lawns while the pool villas and residences have private pools to appeal to those seeking privacy.

Until now, Desert Palm has been Dubai's best kept secret, but the unique setting and atmosphere it offers mean you can't help but shout about it.
