340 face deportation after police crackdown

POLICE CRACKDOWN: Fifty-nine beggars were caught as part of an operation by police and municipality officials in Dubai.

More than 340 street vendors, beggars and illegal car washers have been nabbed in a new crackdown by police and Dubai Municipality officials.

The sweep against the law-breakers had also resulted in the seizure of several low-quality goods, pirated CDs and food items.

Civic inspectors conduct daily spot checks in streets and public places to prevent street vending, begging and car washing in public places by individuals in violation of a ruling by the Ministry of Labour.

The nine inspectors at the Security and Control Unit of the Administrative Affairs Department caught a total of 341 people including 185 street vendors, 59 beggars, 54 car washers and 43 illegal butchers and fish cleaners during August, latest figures reveal.

A total of 700 counterfeit products including ready-made garments, perfumes, cameras, and watches that were fake international brands were confiscated.

Also seized were 2,574 DVDs with pirated films and 89 pornographic movies, 455 cartons of foodstuff that include 325 boxes of fruits and vegetables and 130 cases of aerated drinks.

The offenders have been handed over to the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department for deportation in coordination with Dubai Police.
