Phase one of a new telephone numbering system has been successfully completed and will go into full operation across Kuwait from October 17.
The new system will entail the addition of the number 2 before landline phone numbers, 6 before Wataniya numbers and 9 before Zain numbers.
Although operator services numbers which currently begin with 8 will have a 1 before them, those consisting of three digits, such as 101 and 112, will remain unchanged, Kuwait Times reported on Monday.
Communication Minister Abdulrahman Al-Ghunaim also said that when the third mobile communications service provider, Viva, starts operations, its numbers will start with 5.
The minister said the successful conclusion of the first part of the project had been achieved due to the efforts of a large number of ministry staff, engineers and technicians, along with the direct participation of staff from local telecom firms.
