A Bahrain MP has called for the the dilapidated Sitra Central Market in Manama to be redeveloped, branding it a health hazard.
Sayed Haidar Hassan Ali Hassan Al Sitri is putting an urgent proposal to parliament, once it resumes later this month, reported Gulf Daily News on Thursday.
"The designs for the market have been prepared, but are still waiting approval," he told the paper.
"The current market is very old and primitive, it is open and not air-conditioned, which puts off customers during the summer season. When people go to the market, they can't find car parking because the market's park is full all the time with goods trucks."
He said the market was dirty, run-down and a possible health hazard while parking was also inadequate.
"The tiles are so old that when you visit the market, you think you are visiting a historical monument and they are filthy," said Al Sitri.
He said that there were no dustbins at the stalls and that the leftovers were being thrown on the floor, which was a major attraction for flies and other insects.
Plans for a new market would feature six commercial shops, 16 vegetable and fruit stands, five poultry stands as well as public utilities and parking spaces.
