Nintendo has launched its latest video game console, the DSi, which features a built-in camera, music playback and a larger display than the current DS model.
It’s the third model since the platform launched in 2004 and will be available in Japan on November 1 at an approximate cost of $180. The company will start overseas shipping of the DSi only next year.
The improved DSi is thinner than the current DS model, with a 3.25 inch LCD screen. It also features an audio player with the option of storing music in a memory card.
In a product demonstration, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata showed how players could listen to files at a slower speed and distort music for fun. The built-in 3 megapixel camera allows players to mix images and even scribble on photographs for creative freedom.
Reports state that the company has sold 77.5 million Nintendo DS handheld devices worldwide. In comparison, Sony's PlayStation Portable has sold just 41 million globally.
Iwata admitted that though sales of the DS have been decreasing recently, Nintendo was determined to reverse that trend with new offerings like the Nintendo DSi.
