Border guards have arrested two men trying to smuggle 1,205 kilos of hashish into Saudi Arabia following a fierce gun battle.
Police said the pair, who tried to enter the kingdom in the southern Najran region from Yemen, opened fire on officers when their vehicle was stopped at a roadblock, Saudi daily Arab News reported on Sunday.
“Police returned fire and caught one of the men while the second escaped into a mountainous area but was caught within an hour," Maj. Gen. Mohammed Al-Zahrani, commander of the Border Guard in the region, was quoted as saying.
Police said several guns and ammunition was confiscated from the vehicle.
