Eight die in Sharjah over Eid break

Eight people were killed and 16 injured in accidents in Sharjah over the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, with the majority taking place on the emirate's roads, according to police.

Police said more than 1,840 accidents were reported between Sept. 29 and Oct. 4, with 635 taking place on Sept. 29, the last day of Ramadan, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Sunday.

Road accidents during the period included a car falling off Al Hadeeb Bridge number two on the Sharjah Ring Road, a seven-car pile-up in the Al Wahda area and eleven members of two families being injured in an accident at the Al Badee'ah area.

Other accidents included a two-and-a-half year old child dying after falling off the balcony of an apartment in Al Ghuwair and a three-year-old Pakistani boy drowning in Al Jazeera Park.
