Aldar Properties, Abu Dhabi’s biggest real estate developer, has launched a new subsidiary which will build 3,500 berths in 14 marinas across the emirate.
The new company, Aldar Marinas, will offer facilities for the buying, selling and maintenance of sailing yachts, motor and day boats as well as other types of craft, CEO Ronald Barrott told a press conference at the Cityscape exhibition in Dubai.
“There’s a big opportunity for the sailing industry here, but good facilities do not exist,” said Barrott. “The industry needs to grow and we want to turn Abu Dhabi into an international luxury boating destination.”
Barrott said that the first marina was scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.
Just last week, Prince Albert II of Monaco said that Abu Dhabi could be come one of the world's premier hubs for superyachts.
"I admire the way Abu Dhabi is going about promoting itself within the superyacht community and believe it has great potential," said Prince Albert, during a visit to the Abu Dhabi stand at the Monaco Yacht Show.

An average expatriate husband and wife in Dubai get a total salary of AED3000-6000 a month. An average partition room for a couple in a flat in the housing ghettoes of Satwa or other less-fortunate areas in Dubai costs up to AED4000, depending on the ''amenities'' it may come with (other calculation welcome). If the real estate mavericks in Dubai can initiate mass housing development for bachelors and couples in every district here, for an average rental fees, then work out the idea with employers and the legislation with the federal government, all the rest would be appalling. Why do they seem unstoppable in shoveling Dubai deserts just to let the waters of the Arabian Gulf pass along the elite residences ''by the lake''. Why then the mavericks could not resist building marinas and beachfronts when the supply is due while the demand is a farce? Stop the nightmare where you have had enough but build dreams where you have less.
