The Gulf's first vocational training institute has opened in Bahrain. Established as part of the National Education Reform Initiative, and in partnership with Bahrain's Economic Development Board (EDB), The Bahrain Polytechnic seeks to redress the imbalance in higher and further education opportunities in the country.

Sheikh Mohammed Al-Khalifa, chief executive of EDB, said that universities in Bahrain had previously had to cater to a large number of students with varying abilities.

"With the opening of the only polytechnic in the region," he continued, "universities can focus on providing academic programmes, whilst the polytechnic will provide professional and applied education."

The polytechnic will offer two-year diploma and four-year bachelor's programmes, in subjects such as accounting, finance and marketing. "Graduates of the facility will be equipped to provide a range of technical skills to support our diverse economy," said Al Khalifa.

The polytechnic aims to complement the role of higher education in Bahrain by giving students professional, industry-focused skills aligned with market needs.
