Crash course in lifesaving skills

A new course aims to equip dental professionals with lifesaving skills in preparation for potential clinical emergencies.

The General Implant Forum & Training (GIFT) organisation is fronting a two-day course later this month, designed to give basic paramedic skills to dentists and their employees.

Hosted by the Dubai-based Dental Centre, the course will run from October 31 to November 1, and will address medical emergencies that could develop during treatment.

The course will cover topics such as how to identify an emergency, the necessary medication and equipment required and how to deal with the situation in a calm and professional way.

"There are areas of the course that will be of use and interest to all dentists, their assistants and dental students," said Leyla Porteous, regional course director for GIFT.

"For instance, there is a grey area about what medication a dentist can have onsite and is allowed to administer. This course will give it to them in black and white.

"There is also a specific way to administer CPR to a patient in a dental chair that some practitioners may not be aware of."

Taught by Professor Zohair Haider, a former professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at King Saud University's college of dentistry, Riyadh, the two-day course will offer dentists 12.5 CDE credit hours, issued by Harvard Medical School Dubai Center.
