Iran opens landmark telco tower

Iran has inaugurated the fourth-highest telecommunication tower in the world in its capital Tehran.

Located on a hill in northwestern Tehran, Milad Tower measures 435 meters (1,427 feet) from its base to the tip of its antenna.

"Milad Tower will be incorporated in the collective memory of Iranians," said Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf at the inauguration ceremony.

Construction of the Milad Tower has taken eleven years to complete at a cost of nearly $194 million. Lack of funds, technological setbacks and international sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program is believed to have caused the delay.

The 315 meter shaft is crowned with a 12 storey glass and metal head, measuring 60 meters in diameter. This spacious area houses a rotating restaurant, a television and telecommunication area, an art gallery and an open terrace.

Inspired by Islamic architecture, the tower is expected to become a national symbol.

The world’s tallest telecommunication tower is the 1,815-foot-high CN Tower in Toronto.
