ACI Real Estate and three-time Wimbledon champion, Boris Becker on Wednesday unveiled a 3 billion dirham ($817 million) integrated resort bearing his name to be built on Al-Marjan Island in Ras Al-Khaimah emirate in the UAE.
The developer is Middle East Vision and the master developer is Rakeen, set up in under the auspices of Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al-Qassimi, Ras Al-Khaimah's Crown Prince.
The Boris Becker Beach Resort & Tennis Academy will be a 230,000 square metre recreational and residential development and will include holiday homes, a luxury resort, spa and conference facilities, a five-star hotel and a tennis academy, ACI said in a statement.
The development will be partly powered solar energy and is due to be completed in 2010, it added.
Becker holds a fifty percent stake in the Academy, and an undisclosed share the rest of the resort.
The statement said that Becker will play a significant role in the design of the Tennis Academy and will also co-manage the completed facility, assisted by long-time friend, and fellow German Davis-Cup team partner, Eric Jelen.
The facility will include six tennis courts with rebound-ace surfaces.
According to the statment, Ras Al-Khaimah's population is projected to grow from 150,000 to 750,000 by 2020, with the number of visitors increasing from 500,000 to a 2.5million by 2012.
Earlier in the year, Boris Becker put his name to the Boris Becker Business Tower, in Dubai's Business Bay, being developed by ACI Real Estate as part of the "Sports Legends Trilogy" alongside towers also named after former racing drivers Michael Schumacher and Niki Lauda.
