Nakheel tower dwarfs Emaar's Burj Dubai

Nakheel plans to build the world's tallest tower.

Last week Dubai-based developer Nakheel finally announced plans for its own tall tower in Dubai that will dwarf rival developer Emaar's Burj Dubai - the current tallest structure in the world.

The Nakheel Harbour and Tower will be more than 1km high and will be part of US $38.12 billion (AED140 billion) project that will include the world's first man-made inland city harbour.

Nakheel's chief executive Chris O'Donnell said the project would take more than 10 years to complete and that preliminary foundation works had already begun.

The development, located at the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road and the $11 billion Arabian Canal currently under construction, will cover an area of more than 2.7 million m2.

Last November Construction Week disclosed the location of the tower that was initially being called the "tall tower" and the "Al Burj" to be between Jumeirah Lake Towers and Ibn Battuta Mall on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Australian architects Woods Bagot has designed the tower.

"All I can say at the moment is that it (Nakheel tower) will be more than 1km tall," O'Donnell said at a private launch of the tower.

Emaar's Burj Dubai, currently the tallest man-made structure in the world at over 630m, is expected to reach 900m upon completion in early 2009.

But Emaar refused to reveal its final height leading to speculation that it could go higher.

"The tower will have four individual towers within a single structure connected by sky bridges," he said.
