Hyder wins US $14.4mn Muharraq Island contract

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Saturday, 11 October 2008

Hyder Consulting has won a US $14.4 million (BHD5.28 million) contract to design and supervise infrastructure works for 6km2 of Bahrain's Diyar Al Muharraq development.

Diyar Al Muharraq's CEO Aaref Hejres said the design stage will take Hyder about one year before contractors are called to start building the infrastructure for the $3.2 billion city to be built on reclaimed land off the northern shores of Muharraq Island.

Hejres said the land reclamation process was ahead of schedule with 70% of the initial 6km2 having been reclaimed and expected to be completed in late 2009.

The company should also finalise the sale of plots to developers within the next month, Hejres said.

"Twenty per cent of this project will be developed by us, the master developer, the rest will be completed by several other carefully selected developers," he said.

"I imagine they will start working on the project in the first quarter of next year.

"Our idea is to have them comply with some kind of building code that promotes creativity in terms of design, so I think you will see lots of iconic buildings and one of them will be ours."

When completed Diyar Al Muharraq will span 12km2 and consist of 30,000 properties housing around 100,000 people. It will also feature Bahrain's largest mall, parklands, a marina, energy sub-stations, hotels, schools and a business district.
