Harry Potter publisher to set up Qatar operation

A major new publishing house is to be established in Qatar in a venture with UK books giant Bloomsbury, which publishes the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling.

Bloomsbury Publishing and Qatar Foundation on Wednesday announced the launch of the publishing house for English and Arabic books in the Middle East.

Known as Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing, it will be based in Doha and will publish books in both English and in Arabic.

It will focus on books in six main areas - fiction and non-fiction for adults and for children, educational books for schools, academic books for universities and researchers, classics of Arabic literature, and reference books.

The books will be published around the world through Bloomsbury's distribution network. The partnership will also aim to help improve standards of translation into and out of Arabic.

Nigel Newton, founder and chief executive of Bloomsbury, who will be chairman of the management committee of Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing, said: "Our aim is not simply to publish in the region, but also internationally, to identify and nurture literary talent and to help to bring new skills and knowledge to Qatar."

Rashid Al Naimi, vice president, Administration, Qatar Foundation added: "The creation of a reading, literary culture is part of Qatar's vision of a dynamic knowledge society with diverse and competitive global talents that we can export to the world."
