The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi has said that the emirate's education system is in need of a "major overhaul".

And Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan added that he was prepared to spend heavily in putting it right in a bid to secure the future competitiveness of Abu Dhabi.

He said the system needed to be radically and fundamentally rebuilt at every level, news agency WAM reported.

The Crown Prince made his comments after being presented with plans to change the emirate's education system by three taskforces commissioned by the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

The proposals - the details of which were not announced - were the culmination of five months of meetings by taskforce members to debate the future of all levels of education in Abu Dhabi.

Work on the policy agenda follows the recent transfer of responsibilities for the education sector from the federal government to Abu Dhabi.

The Crown Prince was told that during their deliberations the taskforces looked at examples of best practice in some of the world's most successful education systems.

Sheikh Mohammed was told that a wide range of recommendations was being proposed by the Group, across the entire education landscape.

He was advised that many of the policies being recommended indicate a significant shift from current policies and that some would have serious financial implications.

The Crown Prince indicated that he was prepared to take whatever decisions were required to get the system right and emphasised that he regarded it as an absolutely vital investment for the future.
