A new law has been introduced in Qatar to punish the misuse of drinking water - with fines of up to $2,700 for violators.

Using drinking water for washing vehicles or for cleaning of open areas in front of buildings are among the violations that would attract the fines, Qatar daily Gulf Times reported on Tuesday.

Washing of vehicles shall henceforth be permissible only at designated places such as car wash and service stations.

Under the new regulations, the owners of buildings or tenants who fail to take measures to check the leakage of water will also be liable to pay fines.

Those who do not switch off exterior lights in their buildings from 7am to 4pm will also be fined.

Law enforcement officers from Qatar's electricity and water company Kahramaa are permitted to check premises and take all necessary punitive action.

Kudos Qatar, great Rule, you have shown to the world what even Singapore did not put through. This is something every nation in the GCC follow especially Dubai. Thank you, for being the trendsetter.
