Orange Business Services has won a real estate telecoms consultancy contract with Saudi Arabia's flagship mega-project King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), the company said on Tuesday.
Orange, the business services arm of France Telecom, said it will advise KAEC master developer Emaar The Economic City on the design of the city's communications, multimedia and telephony services.
Orange said its aim is to develop KAEC into a "smart city" where multiple networks can run over one infrastructure.
Lionel Reina, vice president for Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Orange Business Services, said in a statement a smart city offers "lower costs in terms of maintenance and management, whilst offering the potential to bring in additional non-rental revenues to developers".
The financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
