MPI CEO Bruce MacMillan.

Meeting Professionals International (MPI) is the first industry organisation to achieve a new event sustainability certification developed for management of the Olympic Games.

The company has been awarded the British Standard 8901 (BSi8901), the world's first sustainable-event indicator, developed to guide the planning of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.

"MPI is intent on being a global leader in creating and propagating sustainable events. We have demonstrated, in conjunction with our partners, that changing your way of working and sharing knowledge can positively encourage the ways we all consider our environment, economy and community," said president and CEO of MPI Bruce MacMillan.

The standard sets a framework that manages sustainability implementation for events, venues or suppliers of any size. The recognition consists of three phases; planning pre-event, implementation during the event, review post-event. Each phase is separately certified.

MPI formalised its commitment to sustainable meeting practices when it also became the first meetings and events company to sign the UN Global Compact, a worldwide corporate citizenship initiative to build the social legitimacy of businesses.

"MPI is committed to being at the forefront of a sustainable meetings industry by implementing sustainable practices globally," added MacMillan.
