Three killed in Bahrain scaffold collapse

Three men died and another was seriously injured after scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in Bahrain.

The worksite in Mahooz has been closed down and the rest of the scaffolding has been ordered to be pulled down following the incident on Monday, Labour Ministry official said.

The same company had a similar accident two years ago when several workers died, Gulf Daily News reported on Tuesday.

Occupational health and safety head Ali Makki told the paper that the scaffoldings were unstable and investigations were continuing.

The three workers killed in the collapse were from Indian and Bangladesh while a fourth worker, an Indian, is in hospital with serious injuries.

The deaths come as organisers of a construction trade fair in Dubai revealed that due to the alarm over the growing number of fatal workplace accidents in the UAE, construction safety would be their key theme.

Epoc Messe Frankfurt, organisers of Intersec trade fair in Dubai, said that 50 percent of all construction site accidents were a result of falls from height and action needed to be taken to reduce the number of injuries and deaths.

“The rapid increase in the number of construction projects in the UAE and other Gulf countries has caused an alarming number of accidents at construction sites,” said Angela Schierholz, senior show manager Epoc Messe Frankfurt.

“A variety of minimum safety standards has been implemented by the UAE government, but the biggest challenge is to make companies adhere to these regulations by imposing fines and sanctions against those who break the rules."
