Putting an end to months of speculation, Emaar Properties has announced that its new fountain will be called ‘Dubai Fountain'.

In a statement, Emaar said it selected the name after a public competition.

More than 4,000 people representing over 100 nationalities entered the competition, the developer said.

The winning name was chosen by a panel from the list of entries.

Commenting on the chosen moniker, Mohammed Ali Alabbar, chairman, Emaar Properties said the simplicity of the name was what gave it the edge.

"The name Dubai Fountain is simple, has instant brand recall and above all, celebrates the global standing of Dubai as a multicultural destination and home to over 180 nationalities," he said. "Dubai Fountain is our tribute to this city, which serves as a platform for thousands of people to realise their dreams and enjoy a vibrant, modern lifestyle."

Emaar put up an AED 100,000 cash prize for the winning entry. The sum is to be divided between the 15 participants who suggested the name.

Announced in June, the Dubai Fountain is intended to be a star attraction of Emaar's Downtown Burj Dubai development.

Covering 275 metres in length, the fountain, which is designed by California, US-based Wet Design, is planned to be approximately 25% larger than the famous Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas.

The water feature, which will have an integrated musical and light element, will use over 6,600 lights and 50 colour projectors.

Costing an estimated US$218 million to build, it is expected to be operational in 2009.

How original! You have a 20 billion dollar project and that is the best they could come up with? Burj Dubai (which I personally think is a good name seeing as it is as an iconic statement as you are going to get), Dubai Mall and now Dubai Fountain?
