UAE to get landscape association

The UAE appears to be on its way to getting a formal landscape association.

To date, despite the landscape boom in the region and the existence of relevant associations elsewhere, the UAE has been without an association of its own.

Frustrated by the situation and a lack of contact between firms, a group of industry professionals that has been meeting up regularly on an informal regular basis is now seeking to establish a formal government recognized association.

"In the last year, we have set up a steering committee and taken steps to become a formal government recognized association or society," said Mona Campbell, principal director of SBG Landscape Design, a member of the newly named Emirates Landscape Society.

"It is time to have a landscape association in the UAE," added Payam Raoufi, landscape engineer at Mouchel and a founding member of the society.

The massive amount of development in the region has seen the number of landscape architects working in the region shoot up in the past 20 years as well as attracting a plethora of related contractors and suppliers.

New entrants continue to arrive on the market attracted by the projected continuation of the landscape boom.

More than US$16.34 billion will be spent on gardens and landscaping in the Middle East region in the next five years, according to research by Messe Frankfurt.
