$1.4m facelift for East Jerusalem schools

A European Commission donation of more than US$1.4 million has helped to renovate seven schools in East Jerusalem.

The Comprehensive School Upgrading project, run in conjunction with Save the Children Sweden and the Faisal Husseini Foundation, has improved electricity networks, sanitation systems, carpentry and general classroom conditions. The project has also provided schools with new electronic equipment, including computers and fax machines.

John Kjaer, representative of the European Commission (EC) in Jerusalem, said the renovations "reflect the ongoing commitment of the European Union to the provision of quality education to all Palestinians."

The funding will be used to provide educational support services, such as extracurricular activities, teacher training, and special needs assistance, to eight other schools in the city.

The project is part of an ongoing $2.6 million programme to improve services to Palestinian people. As the largest donor to Palestine, the EC also makes monthly contributions to teachers' salaries.
