Plans to introduce financial incentives to teachers working in the Middle East have been discussed at a top-level education meeting in Oman.
Education Ministers from the Middle East and North Africa have come together in Muscat to discuss ways to improve standards in schools across the region.
Discussions have centred on issues such as the role of education, current status of teachers and education reform, with financial incentives for teacher high on the agenda, news agency WAM reported.
Dr Ansaf Abdo Kassem, chief of education research at the Centre of Education Research and Development in Yemen, called on Ministers to better reward teachers who perform well and provide high standards for pupils.
He said: "The current education policies have the biggest impact on teachers' financial status. Unfortunately, the current promotional system and professional training programmes are not clear and definite and do not encourage teachers to the profession itself.
"In addition, the education policies put teachers in one level and standard without taking into consideration the differences of their creativity and innovation".
Dr Abdallah Al Amiri, advisor to the UAE Education Minister, added that teachers' incentives occupied a great part of the discussions during the meetings.
A paper titled "Teachers' Benefits and Incentives" stressed the need to finance and support education, as well as looking at the current status of education and teachers, and ways of improving the standards of students in the region.
