More than 5000 classrooms in Texas will be equipped with interactive whiteboards within 30 months, the Fort Worth independent school district (FWISD) has announced.
Melody Johnson, superintendent of FWISD, said the initiative is key to achieving the district's main objectives. "These whiteboards will help to move Fort Worth ISD from a system of many good and great schools to a great school system."
Consisting of a large screen connected to a projector and computer, the technology allows teachers to access and display pictures, video and other information from the internet, while maintaining all the functionality of a traditional whiteboard. Data can also be manipulated, saved and shared.
The first phase of the project will roll out 1700 interactive whiteboards over the next four months, with the remaining 3300 to be installed by April 2010.
The initiative is part of FWISD's $593.6 million bond programme to give students the education they need to stay competitive in the global marketplace.
