INVESTIGATION ONGOING: The RTA is conducting a thorough investigation into the crane collapse, Younes said. (Patrick Littlejohn)

The investigation into Sunday's accident on Dubai's busiest highway in which a crane collapsed across the road is still ongoing, a senior official at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) told Arabian Business on Tuesday.

Peyman Younes, director of marketing and corporate communications at the RTA, said the transport authority was conducting a thorough investigation into the accident, which forced the closure of a section of Sheikh Zayed Road and caused traffic congestion throughout the city.

The mobile crane was working on the metro station next to Emirates Towers when it collapsed. The crane landed on a gantry sign, which stopped it from hitting the road.

"The RTA follows a very rigorous safety process... There is quite a bit of information that we need to look through," Younes said.

Younes could not give a timeframe for when the investigation would be completed.

He said the accident had not delayed work on the metro station. He said work began again as soon as the collapsed crane was secured.
