FLOODS DISASTER: The UAE will build 1,000 homes in the country for victims of the flooding. (AFP)

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered 1,000 houses to be built for those who lost homes in the recent floods in Yemen.

The tropical storm and torrential rain which hit the eastern province of Hadhramawt in October caused extensive damage in the region with hundreds of homes made of mud brick being destroyed, news agency WAM reported.

Following Sheikh Khalifa's orders, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy prime minister of UAE and Chairman of UAE Red Crescent Authority (UAERCA) have given directives for the construction work to start.

Dr Ali Abdullah Al Ka'abi, chairman of the Board of Directors of UAERCA, said that preparatory works had already started to construct the houses which would constitute the second phase of humanitarian works of organisation, which rushed relief aid to Yemen in the aftermath of the devastating floods.

Several parts of Yemen, including the capital Sana'a were affected in the flash floods which swept away many homes.
