20,000 volunteers set for big Dubai clean-up

Nearly 20,000 volunteers will take part from Tuesday in the UAE's largest voluntary clean up drive, which will also encourages the public to reuse or recycle.

Clean Up the World 2008, which runs until November 21, is being organised locally by the Dubai Municipality which first got involved in 1994 when just 200 people took part.

Preparations for the clean up are already under way with the Municipality trying to encourage an even greater level of participation than last year when more than 18,000 people participated in removing 4,000 tonnes of waste including debris and abandoned vehicles from various areas.

Yaqoob Al Ali, campaign coordinator, said apart from Dubai Municipality, several government departments, NGOs, and voluntary organisations were participating in this year’s campaign.

The official launch of the event will be held on Tuesday at the Heritage Village, Shindagha with senior government officials and representatives of the sponsors attending.

The opening day will also include an environment-themed stage presentation by school students and an air show on Dubai Creek.

The last day of the campaign (Friday) will see thousands of volunteers joining forces in cleaning up Nad Al Sheba area and various other sites. Also on Friday, a clean up will be organised by the Filipino community at Mamzar Beach area.

The Clean Up the World campaign originated in Australia.
