BAHRAIN ARMY: Skills must be developed within the Gulf state's workforce, says a new survey. (Getty Images)

Bahrain must create an army of skilled tradesmen such as plumbers, farmers, mechanics, electricians and carpenters if it is to fulfil its Economic Vision 2030 masterplan.

The country must rebuild its skills base, from the factory floor to the boardroom, according to international experts called in to identify gaps that must be filled in the labour force.

It must start with basic skills, to ensure self-sustaining employment for Bahrainis, regardless of global impacts, said Allen Consulting Group director Stephen Bartos in comments published in Gulf Daily News on Thursday.

The company was commissioned to carry out a comprehensive skills gap survey by Tamkeen (formerly the Labour Fund).

"In the unlikely event of a significant loss of confidence in the region for whatever reason (economic or political), Bahrainis will need to possess a range of fundamental skills (such as plumbing, carpentry, vehicle repair, fishing and food production), in order to maintain quality of life," he told the paper.

The full survey is expected to be finished by March, but has already identified gaps in every sector, he added.
