A sensual retreat

Six Senses’ latest venture teams local Qatari heritage with Islamic architecture and design.

The latest addition to its existing portfolio of tranquil getaways, Six Senses recently unveiled the Six Senses Spa at Al Sharq Village and Spa, in Doha, Qatar.

In a collaboration of creative minds, the new facility was designed by the Bangkok-based P49 Deesign, alongside Bernhard Bohnenberger, managing director of Six Senses Hotels, Resorts & Spas.

"It is not altogether normal that a managing director would be so intrinsically involved at every stage of the process," Bohnenberger said.

"But with this spa it was important to me that it be delivered to exacting standards, in accordance with the design brief and vision that the vendors had for the Six Senses Spa at Al Sharq Village & Spa," he explained.

While there is no shortage of five-star hotels in Doha, Al Sharq Village and Spa was created as an observation of local heritage, using traditional architecture and interior design.

"The entire spa complex has been inspired by the old Doha, a flourishing harbour town where traditional Islamic customs were observed whilst people looked to the future with humble optimism. The positioning of the spa itself within Al Sharq Village & Spa reflects that of a single neighbourhood within a city," said Bohnenberger.

"Six Senses Spa is unique in that we have used ancient philosophy to ensure that the space represents a unique blend of natural finishes and textures, acknowledges local customs and expectations whilst adapting modern technologies, but most importantly, recaptures traditional Qatari hospitality," he added.

Using the concept of Qatari local traditions as a starting point, the initial design brief of the Six Senses Spa in Doha was born.

"The initial brief dictated a required reflection of traditional Arab architecture that acknowledges local customs to ensure correct guest flow around the facility," said Bohnenberger."
